A Note About Fascism

In my earlier diary I  noted that the wingnuts have taken to quoting Franklin D Roosevelt to support their anti-union stance.

However they avoid this one like the plague.

"The liberty of democracy is not safe if people tolerate growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism. "

Now I have some observations:

Conservatives scream against the size of government and how it is just too big to get their pea-brains around, and this shows itself every time they get voted in; they make a total balls-up of governing.

Now what annoys them the most is that government imposes certain rules on private corporations, pesky details such as environmental protection and consumer protections to name but two. They are determined that this brake on profitability should be removed by defunding the agencies responsible for oversight.

One can only assume that their objective is to weaken government to such extent it becomes less powerful than the industries it seeks to regulate. We could point out that the SCOTUS ruling in Citizens United is just another step in the ongoing process.

Hence if we look at FDR's quote we can only come to one conclusion:

They're fascists.
